Youth Programs

Over the years the Long Island Yacht Club has created a number of events and programs for our members children, grandchildren, and young adults. This page outlines some of the programs currently available to them throughout the summer as well as Kids Days on select Sundays during the winter season.

In addition to these organized programs, the children have a basketball hoop (well used), play baseball pick-up games they organize( great fun for all boys and girls that join in), and for the younger set, a well equipped playground area adjacent to the pool.

Should you have any additional questions please feel free to call our membership number at 631-669-0129 or click here to email the club.

The Junior Sailing Program provides instructions by a certified instructor and is available to members’ children & grandchildren between ages 8 and 18. The program currently runs two four- week sessions during the summer. Training is available on Optimist Pram and Sunfish boats, and we plan to expand to 420’s, Laser’s and other popular one- design class boats. We anticipate expanding the Program beyond the summer season, enabling those juniors who have the desire, to perfect their skills.

Through participation in the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association (GSBYRA), junior sailors have an opportunity to take part in regattas at various Yacht Clubs along the Great South Bay. Many are 2-day events for one-design sailboats. The most popular classes are now Sunfish, Optimist Pram, Narrasketuck, Flying Scot, Laser, JY15, and 420.

Our Youth Tennis Program provides organized tennis activities for children ranging in age from 4 years old to teenagers. There will be group lessons available at all levels and for all ages. This summer we are offering round robin leagues for the youth. This will be doubles matches during the week and on the weekends. We are also going to host special tournaments for the youth this summer, which will be more competitive and exciting. We anticipate having a tennis pro available for those who would like to schedule private, semi-private, or group lessons at a higher level of play.

The Childrens Swim Team is an extremely successful and well-attended summer activity at the Long Island Yacht Club. Certified and qualified instructors in our Olympic size swimming pool conduct lessons and training and the team has been participating in swim meets at several other clubs during the year.

A number of volunteer parents regularly participate and encourage the team during all home and away swim meets.

Kids Day has become a popular wintertime activity where members’ children and grandchildren spend a Sunday afternoon and participate in organized and supervised games as well as watching occasional in-house movies currently popular with kids.
